Tokyo 2020 will be the eighth Olympic Games I have photographed. I have never been to an Olympics where I saw more than around 4-5 women photographers amongst the total of some 160 photographers that the 4 major wire services collectively send to the event.

At my first Olympics in 2004, Amy Sancetta from the Associated Press went out of her way to introduce herself to me and welcome me. Her friendliness and warmth went a long way toward making me feel less alone. Similarly, at the 2008 and 2010 Olympics, Jessica Rinaldi from Reuters and Eileen Blass from USA Today were generous, funny, and a pleasure to work with. They gave me a sense that I belonged and that I hadn’t made a mistake in my choice of career.
