You have to love this job because the schedules, the emotional ups and downs, the pressures would sometimes be too much of you didn’t love it. It’s a creative field. If you go to a game and make a good picture or shoot a nice portrait, you go home feeling great, but if you miss something, you go home feeling awful.

Practice the art of stillness. One of my mentors, the late Howard Chapnick of Black Star, taught me to slow down to see more and avoid the superficial glance. When entering a situation where I will be photographing a person or an intimate situation I take a moment to look around, to be still. I want to be present and available. I want the individual to know that there is no place I’d rather be, that I am interested in them, their story, their plight. It not only has helped them to relax, as much as possible, but I feel more comfortable as well.

You will give up a lot in your personal life to pursue other peoples’ lives and stories. Remember your stories are about them, but do not lose yourself in the process. Trust your own instincts. Decisions that come from your gut often are the best ones whether navigating a conflict situation or shooting a portrait. Find and follow subjects that you are passionate about and trust that will take you to exactly where you are meant to be. You will find your unique visual voice that sets you apart from everyone else once you stop trying to be everyone else.

At my first Olympics in 2004, Amy Sancetta from the Associated Press went out of her way to introduce herself to me and welcome me. Her friendliness and warmth went a long way toward making me feel less alone. Similarly, at the 2008 and 2010 Olympics, Jessica Rinaldi from Reuters and Eileen Blass from USA Today newspaper were generous, funny, and a pleasure to work with. They gave me a sense that I belonged and that I hadn’t made a mistake in my choice of career.

When I graduated from college I was given sage advice, and I turned down an internship at National Geographic magazine to take a full-time job at The Courier Journal and The Louisville Times newspapers. It would be almost twenty years before I was ready for the challenge of Geographic after working with insightful newspaper editors and photographers.

FOOTNOTES

*Photojournalists are sourced as best as we could to when they started professionally in photojournalism after college and after internships. This is not a definitive list. Few may have started as editors first. Information gathered are from photographers bios, Linkedin profiles, past published interviews or directly from photographers. Many started as photographer then went on to being great picture editors, teachers and directors of photography.

*This list is largely and intentionally American photojournalists or those who worked for American publications, photo agencies, news wires, and international photojournalists. Included are some iconic names outside of US. Some would be considered documentary photographers but their work does lean more towards photojournalism.
